What Is a Fire Resistant Conveyor Belt?

A fire resistant conveyor belt uses flame-retardant rubber in the top and bottom covers and, where required, in the skim rubber around the carcass. The compound combines a suitable rubber base with flame-retardant additives to reduce ignition, continued burning, and flame propagation.

Fire performance is evaluated by requirements such as after-flame time, afterglow, and flame propagation. The product is also commonly called a flame retardant conveyor belt. For hot-material conveying, fire resistance and heat resistance need to be considered separately.

Fire resistance is measured by the time a belt specimen continues burning after the ignition source is removed. Higher safety grades retain this afterflame requirement while adding drum-friction or fire-propagation testing.

The flame-retardant rubber system can be combined with additional cover properties according to the conveyed material and operating temperature. Fire performance remains the primary requirement, while the cover compound provides the additional resistance required by the conveyor line.

FAQs

Does a thicker rubber cover provide better fire resistance?

Not necessarily. Cover thickness is mainly selected according to wear rate, conveyed material and required belt life. Fire resistance comes primarily from the flame-retardant rubber compound and the fire performance of the finished belt. Increasing the top cover from one thickness to another does not automatically improve its fire grade. You can therefore select cover thickness around the actual conveying conditions rather than simply increasing rubber thickness for fire resistance.

Is every fire resistant conveyor belt suitable for underground coal mines?

No. An underground conveyor belt can require more than flame resistance alone. Depending on the mine specification, electrical surface resistance, drum-friction behaviour or additional flame-propagation requirements may also apply. For a coal mine conveyor belt, tell us that the installation is underground from the beginning. We can then consider these additional properties together with the required fire performance instead of treating it as a standard above-ground fire-resistant belt.

Can a fire resistant conveyor belt also operate in low-temperature environments?

Yes, but flame resistance and low-temperature flexibility are separate properties. If your conveyor operates outdoors in winter, in cold regions or in low-temperature underground conditions, we need the minimum operating temperature as well as the fire requirement. The rubber formulation can then be designed to retain the required flexibility at low temperature while maintaining the specified flame-retardant performance.

Can fire-resistant rubber be identified by its color, hardness or appearance?

No. A fire resistant conveyor belt may look and feel very similar to an ordinary black rubber conveyor belt. Rubber color, surface finish and hardness alone cannot tell you how long the material will continue burning after the flame source is removed. The difference lies in the compound formulation and its actual flame behaviour, which is why appearance should not be used as the basis for identifying fire-resistant performance.

Does the splice need to match the fire-resistant properties of the belt?

For a hot-vulcanized splice, the joint rubber should be compatible with the fire-resistant belt construction. Ordinary joint rubber may create a local section with different flame behaviour even when the mechanical strength of the splice is sufficient. Where the conveyor installation has a defined fire requirement, the joint materials should therefore be selected to match the belt’s flame-retardant properties rather than considering splice strength alone.

Does fire resistance also protect the belt against tearing from sharp materials?

No. Fire resistance controls ignition, continued burning and flame propagation; it does not provide additional protection against longitudinal tearing or puncture. If your conveyor handles sharp coal, ore, scrap or other materials that can penetrate the belt, we can combine the required flame retardant conveyor belt construction with additional rip-stop reinforcement. This allows fire performance and mechanical tear protection to address two different operating risks within the same belt.
