What Is an Anti Static Conveyor Belt?

An anti static conveyor belt, also known as an ESD conveyor belt, uses conductive rubber compounds to limit static charge accumulation during operation. We integrate the anti-static property into the belt covers, allowing charges generated by materials, pulleys, and rollers to transfer toward a properly grounded conveyor structure.

You can combine anti-static performance with flame, oil, heat, or abrasion resistance according to your conveyed material and operating environment. The belt provides a charge-transfer path, while effective static dissipation still depends on the electrical continuity and grounding of the complete conveyor system.

Electrical Resistance Testing for Finished Anti Static Conveyor Belts

We test samples taken from the finished vulcanized conveyor belt rather than relying only on the resistance of uncured rubber compounds. This verifies whether the complete belt delivered to you meets the resistance requirement confirmed for the order.

Sample From the Finished Belt

Test pieces are cut from the completed belt and linked to the corresponding production batch. When your specification requires both belt surfaces to be verified, samples are prepared for the carrying cover and pulley cover separately.

Condition the Test Pieces

The samples are kept under the temperature, humidity, and conditioning period required by the selected test standard. This reduces resistance variation caused by testing samples immediately after production or under changing workshop conditions.

Prepare the Test Surface

The selected surface is kept clean and free from release agents, dust, oil, moisture, or other contamination that could change the contact between the electrode and rubber surface.

Place the Electrodes and Measure

The electrodes are placed on the specified belt surface using the arrangement required by the selected standard. Resistance is measured at the agreed positions rather than taking only one reading from one part of the belt.

Compare Results With the Required Limit

Each recorded resistance result is evaluated against the maximum value stated in your project specification. When ISO 284 is used as the acceptance basis, the finished belt must meet its specified maximum resistance requirement.

Retest After an Abnormal Reading

If one position produces an abnormal result, we first check the sample surface, electrode contact, test environment, and equipment condition before repeating the measurement. A repeated result exceeding the agreed limit cannot be accepted as compliant.

We control the formulation and mixing conditions of the conductive rubber so the proportion and distribution of conductive materials remain consistent between batches. This provides a stable material base for the finished anti static conveyor belt to meet the confirmed resistance requirement.

The conductive rubber is then calendered into a continuous cover layer and vulcanized under controlled temperature, pressure, and time. This reduces local resistance variation caused by uneven cover thickness or inconsistent curing across the finished belt.

FAQs

Can Anti-Static Rubber Be Used on Fabric and Steel Cord Belts?

Yes. Conductive cover compounds can be used with EP fabric, NN fabric, and steel cord constructions when the full belt design is compatible. The carcass strength, cover thickness, bonding system, flexing conditions, and required electrical resistance must be considered together. We do not treat anti-static performance as a separate surface addition because the conductive covers still need to bond securely to the selected carcass and maintain their performance during repeated operation.

Does the Splice Need Exactly the Same Anti-Static Rubber as the Belt?

Not always. On a well-grounded above-ground conveyor, one splice made with rubber of slightly different resistance usually has only a local effect because the belt can discharge through many contact points along its running length. However, the splice material should still match the belt’s key anti-static and flame-safety properties for combustible-dust, underground, single-conductive-surface, or high-risk applications. Large repairs, multiple splices, or clearly insulating compounds can no longer be treated as negligible.

Does an Anti-Static Conveyor Belt Require Special Storage?

The belt does not require a special warehouse solely because it is anti-static, but normal rubber-conveyor-belt storage controls still matter. Keep it away from direct sunlight, heat sources, ozone-producing equipment, oil, solvents, and excessive moisture. Avoid long-term compression, sharp bending, and contamination of the cover surfaces. Proper storage protects the rubber compound and prevents surface conditions that could interfere with later resistance testing or reduce the belt’s mechanical performance.

Is a Lower Electrical Resistance Always Better?

No. The required resistance should come from the project specification, operating risk, and selected test method. A value lower than the required limit does not automatically create a higher international safety grade. Excessive conductive filler can also affect rubber processing, mechanical properties, adhesion, or other cover performance. We therefore review whether the requested value is technically appropriate and can be maintained consistently in finished-belt production before confirming the conductive compound.

What Can Cause Belt Resistance to Increase During Service?

Resistance may increase because of severe cover wear, surface contamination, oil or chemical attack, heat ageing, unsuitable repair materials, or poor contact with the grounded conveyor structure. These factors do not affect every installation equally. When abnormal static accumulation appears, you should check the conveyed material, operating temperature, cleaning method, cover condition, splice and repair areas, roller contact, frame continuity, and grounding instead of assuming that the original belt compound alone has failed.

Can an Existing Anti-Static Belt Be Reproduced From Its Marking?

Not reliably. Belt markings usually show only part of the construction and may not include the original resistance limit, test method, conductive surface arrangement, or combined flame, oil, or heat requirements. We review the marking together with the original specification, application, conveyed material, and safety conditions. When the information is incomplete, an old belt sample or further technical confirmation may be needed to avoid copying only the dimensions while missing the required anti-static performance.
